Privacy Policy for ReelCast

Last updated: July 26, 2026

ReelCast (“we”, “our”, or “us”) operates the ReelCast mobile application (the “App”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our App.

Information We Collect

Location Data

When you use the “Use My Location” feature, or when the App opens, the App requests access to your device’s GPS coordinates. This location is used solely to fetch local fishing conditions (weather, tides, and wave data) for your area and to show fishing spots and target species near you. We do not store your location data on our servers or share it with any third parties beyond what is required to retrieve real-time conditions from the public weather and mapping services described below.

Data Stored On Your Device

The App saves the following directly on your device. None of this data is transmitted to our servers or shared with anyone:

Recent searches — location names and coordinates you’ve searched for.
Last location — the most recent location you viewed, so the App can reopen where you left off.
Target species preference — the fish species you’ve selected to see conditions for.
Saved fishing spots — any custom spots you pin and save for quick access (up to 50).

You can clear all of this data at any time by clearing the App’s data in your device settings.

Usage Data

We do not collect any personal information, usage analytics, or tracking data. We do not use cookies or third-party analytics services.

Third-Party Services

To provide real-time fishing conditions and mapping, the App sends your selected location coordinates (latitude and longitude) to the following public services:

NOAA Weather API (weather.gov) — for current weather and forecasts
NOAA Tides & Currents API (tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov) — for tide predictions
Open-Meteo Marine API (open-meteo.com) — for wave and swell data
NOAA NDBC (ndbc.noaa.gov) — for buoy pressure and water temperature data
OpenStreetMap Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org) — for location search and reverse geocoding
Esri (arcgisonline.com) — for map tiles when you open the interactive spot map. Opening or panning the map sends the visible map area to Esri’s map tile service.

These are all publicly available government and open-source services (Esri’s ocean basemap is free to use). Please refer to their respective privacy policies for information on how they handle data.

Data Storage

On your device: Recent searches, your last location, your target species preference, and any saved fishing spots are stored locally on your device. You can clear this at any time by clearing the App’s data in your device settings.
On our servers: We do not store any personal data on our servers. Our backend only acts as a proxy to fetch public weather and tide data.

Children’s Privacy

ReelCast is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected with an updated “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
